Designing Fabrics and garments using cultural elements from the Ga-Adangbe tribe in Ghana
Welcome to my professional Art Portfolio. One of my defining principles is establishing an open dialogue between form and function in all aspects of my artwork. Look through my work to see this in action, and get in touch for more information.
Textiles and fashion play a very vital role in my part of the world. Our textiles and fabrics that are produced in my country have very rich cultural connotations to them making them authentic and unique.
It is exciting that my country, Ghana, has several cultures that are characterized by their unique symbols, languages, philosophies which are translated into their fabrics and fashion. I am from the Akan clan made up of the Ashantis, Fantis, Akuapems and many others. The Ashanti people have the rich kente made from colorful warp and weft yarns which is woven on traditional wooden looms. They also have the “Adinkra” fabrics designed by stamping fabrics using the adinkra symbols of the Ashanti people. One other popular fabric produced by the Ashantis is the batik fabric designed using wax to block dyes from penetrating into the design areas of the fabric. This produces interesting and unique fabric designs.
